WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8, 2009The Other Famous GRPDBad pizza is a crime,
according to Mike Raymond, owner of Grand Rapids Pizza & Delivery (or
GRPD).
In fact, the week-old pizzeria has a guarantee in order to prevent bad
pizza experiences. If a bad pizza experience arises, the customer can bring
in the uneaten portion (the pizza must be recently-ordered) and GRPD will
make their version of the recipe for free.
"We're just trying to get our product out there and in the community,"
Raymond said. "There are a lot of times when the box tastes better than the
actual product."
That being said, Raymond and his pizza team create original pies from
scratch, adding their own twist along the way. Some of
their signatures include Jalapeno Chicken Pizza, Hawaii 5-O and an olive
oil pizza, which Raymond explains, "Is a nod to Italy." GRPD shows love to
the uniformed men and women that protect our city by creating a Grand
Rapids Fire Department pizza and sub - with every imaginable hot substance
covering both creations - and painting their delivery truck to look like a
police vehicle, which has gained notice.
This past weekend, an actual GRPD vehicle pulled over one of the
pizza-toting GRPD vehicles.
"They pulled over our driver and said 'We need to talk to you.' She was
worried, but they just wanted to take a picture with the truck," Raymond
said. "There has really been an outpouring of support from the GRPD."
Raymond said he's been wanting to expand for the past year. His opportunity
came when his contract with Peppino's was up in February. Raymond chose to
opt out of the franchise and create his own restaurant - with help from his
son, who is a chef.
"So far it's been great. The kids like it, the cops like it," Raymond said.
GRPD (the pizzeria) is located at 340 State St. in Grand Rapids. The Web
site, grandrapidspizza.net - where you can order online (!) - will be up
and running within the next couple weeks. Call (616) 742-GRPD to order your
Hawaii 5-O or other tasty creation.POSTED BY LINDSAY AT 4:53 PM
